Abruzzo is known far and wide as a mountainous region – with dramatic peaks visible from most points in the region. From north to south, take in the beauty of the peaks of the Laga, Gran Sasso and Majella ranges.
The mountains of the region are home to three National Parks and more than 30 reserves – this abundance of natural beauty means that roughly a third of Abruzzo is protected.
The Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains
The Gran Sasso d’Italia is extremely popular with hikers, mountain climbers and skiers. This massif is located in the Apennine Mountains and its highest peak, Corno Grande, reaches a staggering 2912 meters! This makes the Corno Grande the highest peak in the Apennines and the second-highest mountain in Italy outside of the Italian Alps.
The Gran Sasso is known as a hidden gem – even though it is close to Rome, the ski routes are usually less busy than comparable routes in other countries. One popular skiing resort is called Campo Felice and boasts 13.1km of slopes for snowboarding and 14km of ski routes.
If history and culture is more up your alley, a visit to Santo Stefano di Sessanio cannot be missed. This fortified medieval village is located 1250 meters above sea level with many structures in the town dating back to the 11th century.
When in the area, you should definitely stop at Castle of Rocca Calascio – a fortress jutting out of the landscape and in the middle of nowhere. This viewpoint offers glorious vistas of the surrounding countryside and mountains.
Majella Mountains
The Passolanciano Majelletta ski resort offers something unique – skiing with a sea view! This incredible resort lies almost 2000 meters above sea level and overlooks the Adriatic coast. Located in the Majella National Park, the area is renowned for its well preserved Apennine ecosystems.
The area is made up of nearly 100 square miles of undisturbed mountains and canyons. Visitors are treated to amazing hikes and walks in peaceful and solitary locations. At the foot of Majella, lies another gem to explore – Sulmona. This charming town offers a respite to the more strenuous activities with beautiful streets and mountain views.
Enjoy the sugar-coated almonds, “confetti”, made famous in the region – and choose any flavour imaginable from limoncello and tiramisu, to ricotta, pear, and hazelnut!
